After Don McLean’s “American Pie” lyrics, the tragic day is now referred to as “The Day the Music Died.” “The magic that Buddy Holly created was nothing short of a miracle,” John Mellencamp wrote about Holly for our list of the 100 greatest artists. “The fact that he died at 22 is just ridiculous.
